THE CLUB NO ONE WANTS TO JOIN

“Welcome to the club! You have just joined the most miserable club there is!” said a bereaved dad to a newly bereaved dad!

Wow! That sounds harsh – but – if you have lost a child, or anyone else special in your life, you have become a part of that club. It’s a club you would give anything or do anything to NOT be a part of it. Membership fees almost always include despair and hopelessness.

The death of someone you love is not the only thing that can produce misery in us. Our life on this earth can become miserable slowly or “in a blink!” An accident; a difficult health diagnosis; a prodigal child; other relationships gone sour; financial ruin; a broken dream – need I go on? 

Jesus warned us about our potential for becoming a member of “the most miserable club there is” In John 16:33, He said, “…in this world you will have trouble…”

Gratefully, that’s not all He said in that verse. Here it is in its entirety: “I told you these things so that you can have peace in me. In this world you will have trouble. But be brave! I have defeated the world!” Because of Him, we don’t have to remain in misery. Because of Him, we can have peace, comfort, help and support while we remain here on earth – and – we can have Hope for all of eternity.
